Timor-Leste is a country in southeast Asia that has land across several islands. It is closely intermingled with Indonesia. It was colonized by Portugal up until 1975. ‘Timor’ is derived from the Malay word for ‘east’, so the name can be interpreted to mean “east-east”, and in Malay, the country is called ‘Timor Timur’. Almost 41% of the population of the country was under 14 years old as of 2017 estimates.
