Trackback Blog and Post Settings

[toc]

The Telligent platform allows you to control trackback properties at the blog level and at the post level.

How Trackbacks Work

When a weblog post is created or updated, the Telligent platform scans for any links within the body of the post. For each link, the system retrieves the page that was linked to and checks the source code of that page to determine whether the software that hosts it supports the trackback service.  If it does, the system sends a trackback ping to that site to let it know that a post was published linking to it. This ping contains the title, link, and a brief excerpt of the post containing the link.

The Telligent platform allows you to control the trackback properties at a high level (blogs), or at a granular level (posts). When you create or edit a blog, you can enable or disable trackbacks for the entire blog.

By default, when you create a new blog, trackbacks are enabled for the entire blog. If you know that you want to disable trackbacks only for certain posts, you should leave the default setting to enabled. If you know that you generally want to disable trackbacks for the entire blog but you may want to allow it for certain posts, you should disable it at the blog post level.

You may also have previously allowed trackbacks on your blog, but then determined later that you want to disable them. When you disable trackbacks at the blog level they will be disabled even on individual posts that have the setting enabled. The post-level setting will remain enabled in the Control Panel unless you manually change it, but trackbacks will no longer be allowed on any posts.

The blog-level enable/disable property is on the Advanced Configuration > Feedback page in the My Blogs section of the Control Panel.

The Post Options page also contains a setting for trackbacks, but this property controls the post-level settings. By default, it will also be enabled when you create the blog, so to change it you must do so manually through the editing functionality. If trackbacks are enabled at the blog level (the Advanced Configuration page), this property enables or disables trackbacks for any new blogs. The new post inherits the setting on the Post Options > Feedback page.

Even though trackbacks are enabled for new posts on the Post Options page, you may want to disable them for specific posts. You can do this by disabling the trackbacks property on the post's Manage > Posts > Comments & Feedback page.
