The Kick-Off Meeting for Defense Enterprise Science Initiative (DESI) Program on “Supermaneuvarable Autonomous Pursuit” will be held on 26 March 2019 at the Basic Research Innovation & Collaboration Center (BRICC) which is located at 4100 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 450, Arlington, VA 22203. The meeting will take place in the Research Room B with the breakout room available. The DESI targets cross-sector research efforts that accelerate the impact of basic research knowledge on key defense challenges or capability gaps. To that end, DESI will fund basic research efforts that could significantly impact the trajectory of industry applied research, existing development or acquisition programs, or future capabilities. This particular DESI program for autonomous flight of UAV’s has been proposed by a team of researchers from the Stanford University and Skydio, Inc. Inspired by a peregrine falcon, highly-maneuverable platforms are designed by combining avian wing morphing and compliant grasping appendages with state-of-the-art visual tracking and control. The wing can rapidly change planform symmetrically and asymmetrically, enabling exceptional maneuverability.
