Digital Engineering (DE) (also known as model-based engineering or model-based systems engineering) is an initiative developed and championed by ODASD(SE) to help streamline the way defense programs collect, retain, and share data. ODASD(SE) asserts that digital engineering has the potential to promote greater efficiency and coherence in defense programs by ensuring stakeholders have access to accurate, relevant, and consistent information throughout the life of a program.
"Developing and maturing a "digital representation of that system and how it interacts with its environment" would also go a long way in delivering relevant trainers from the outset, rather than today's simulators without the latest software update or inaccurate threat environments. Grosklags added that the digital representation would also help with sustainment efforts throughout the life of the program, as models could help show how the system would hold up over time and in different environments."
