Details: On Wednesday, 31 March, RSI hosted the first of a three-part series of workshops with Dr. Dima Adamsky to advance his ongoing research on the concepts and evolution of Russian thinking about strategic deterrence. The first event, "Evolution of Russia's Views on Deterrence," analyzed the evolution of Russian deterrence theory, sources, and implications from its neglect during the Soviet era to its recent conceptual peak. Michael Kofman joined as a discussant to provide additional insight and critiques of the ongoing research.

Dmitry (Dima) Adamsky is a Professor at the School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy at the IDC Herzliya University, Herzliya, Israel. His research interests include international security, cultural approach to IR, and American, Russian and Israeli national security policies. He has published on these topics in Foreign Affairs, Security Studies, Journal of Strategic Studies, Intelligence and National Security, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Washington Quarterly and Survival. His books Operation Kavkaz and The Culture of Military Innovation (Stanford UP) earned the annual (2006 and 2012) prizes for the best academic works on Israeli security. His book Russian Nuclear Orthodoxy: Religion, Politics and Strategy (Stanford UP) won the 2020 ISA best book award in the category of Religion and IR.

Michael Kofman serves as Director of the Russia Studies Program at CNA and as a Fellow at the Kennan Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center in Washington, DC. His research focuses on Russia and the former Soviet Union, specializing in the Russian armed forces, military thought, capabilities, and strategy. Previously, he served as a Program Manager and subject matter expert at National Defense University, advising senior military and government officials on issues in Russia and Eurasia. Mr. Kofman is also a Senior Editor at War on the Rocks, where he regularly authors articles on strategy, the Russian military, Russian decision-making, and related foreign policy issues. Mr. Kofman has published numerous articles on the Russian armed forces and security issues in Russia/Eurasia, as well as analyses for the U.S. government.
