Using AI to Assist Commanders with Complex Decision-Making

It is critical for the US Army to accelerate investments to support Mission Command decision-making processes, including Strategic Thinking.  The rate that adversaries are using machine learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their operations against the US and its partners is of significant concern.  The Army's Mission Command Center of Excellence thinks of AI as a "true assistant that aids in understanding the operational environment (OE) while supporting the operations process."  AI may be especially useful in fast moving highly complex combat operations.  The purpose of this paper is to determine if a prescriptive Political, Military, Economic, Social, Infrastructure, Information, Physical Environment, and Time (PMESII-PT) model, in conjunction with a recommender system, can improve strategic foresight and decision-making.
