On June 15, 2010 a formal Agreement, the Chile-US Plan of Activities of the Defense Consultive Committee (DCC), was subscribed and signed by the Under-Secretary of Defense of Chile and the Under-Secretary of the United Sates Army as representatives of the respective Departments of Defense. The DCC Chile-US Plan of Activities formalizes the bilateral cooperation between both Ministries, includes the Science, Technology and Logistic Sub-Group of the DCC and contains an Annex documenting the proposed project titled” Hydrokinetic Tidal Energy Project”.
A collaborative effort by The University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth Coastal Systems Program (CSP), Florida International University - Applied Research Center (FIU-ARC), and Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) has resulted in a proposed project entitled "Development of Marine Renewable Energy for the Ministerio de Defensa Nacional de Chile in Support of Earthquake Reconstruction".
The proposed project for the Ministerio de Defensa Nacional de Chile (MDN) is conceptualized in a phased manner consisting of an initial small scale survey (baseline data collection) for site prioritization and selection followed by a pilot turbine generation project with the potential for being the seed of a large scale program for major Chilean Navy port installations and ship yards as appropriate.
