Physics-inspired model for online content dynamics This is the first ever map of the (online) universe showing the negative side of the online world to which all on-line users are all currently exposed. Each circular dot is an online community that actively supports hate and extremism, and each dot contains anywhere up to 1 million people or more across different languages, different countries and different cultures. The color denotes the social media platform (e.g. red is Telegram, yellow is VKontakte, purple is Facebook). These dots (communities) link to each other to form communities-of-communities of distrust and hence potential increased discord and possible threats. Since each of these dots (communities) also links to mainstream communities as well (not shown) this picture shows explicitly the current exposure to hate and extremism for roughly 1 billion members of the global population. Harmful online information can lead to many forms of online anti-X hate, where X can be races, ethnicity, or even vaccines. Images like this represent a way forward, a way to use this information to potentially help policy makers and online moderators to develop better and safer strategies.
