Position Profile

The Supreme Court Administration seeks a hard-working, DEPUTY BAILIFF that manages courtroom operations of the Supreme Court, maintains official hearing records, and assist with the implementation of court security policies and procedures. Maintains day-to-day order, protection, and security operations ensuring the safety of judicial officers, court employees, and visitors to the Temple of Justice.

 

Reporting directly to the Bailiff/Security Officer, this position works independently and exercises limited decision-making authority as defined by the Bailiff/Security Officer and other managerial staff in Supreme Court Administration. May take direction for specific assignments based on area of responsibility and expertise. Interacts regularly with judicial officers, court staff, attorneys, and the public.

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Some of the duties you will perform are:

  • Performs the duties of Bailiff during in-person, hybrid, and virtual court hearings. Duties include: opening and closing court session, keeping the official hearing record, managing courtroom equipment, coordinating with IT support personnel, TVW (Washington’s Public Affairs Network), news media personnel, court staff, attorneys, and judicial officers as needed, and maintaining order in the courtroom at all times.
  • Responsible for the safety, security and protection of court staff, judicial officers and visitors at the Temple of Justice, as assigned, including: monitoring security surveillance cameras, patrolling building perimeter, tracking and reporting security and safety incidents, collaborating with local law enforcement agencies on investigative matters, and conducting trainings related to safety, security, and emergency preparedness.
  • Provides security and protection for court staff and judicial officers for off-site court events, programs, and conferences as assigned. Assignments may include, conducting security-related investigations, evaluating off-site locations and coordinating security, parking, and temporary courtroom set-up with site staff.
  • Works with the Washington State Patrol, the Department of Enterprise Services, the State Senate and House of Representatives Security personnel to ensure comprehensive security coverage for events on and off the Capitol Campus.
  • Supports the Court Bailiff with duties as related to Supreme Court Committee assignments, including Building and Security Committee and Traveling Court Committee. Duties may include; providing written and oral reports, preparing and distributing memoranda related to safety and security measures for travel site, securing travel accommodations, and preparing equipment and supplies for travel site needs.
  • Responds to public correspondence, conducts tours of the Temple of Justice building, and explains the functions of the Supreme Court, the appellate process, and the Court system generally. Also coordinates with the Department of Enterprise Services (DES) regarding tour requests through their agency.
  • Assists the Support Specialist with facility related matters as assigned, including maintaining biographical, historical, and informational material about the Court and managing reservation requests related to the court’s facilities, cars, and equipment.
  • Assists with the development of court-wide policies, procedures and strategic planning related to court operations and security for the Supreme Court.
  • Performs other duties as required.
