OpenMBEE

I'm looking to get corporate funding to get an OpenMBEE environment set up at Crane with the goal of being able to work with the OpenMBEE development team to get the appropriate security capabilities integrated into the software to be able to use it on Navy systems.  I think an obvious one here is PKI suppoprt.  Is anybody in NAVAIR working on this?  I know of Dr. Mark Blackburn's work to address the suitability of the software for the Navy aquisition lifecycle, but a question to him was that his work was not addressing the security concerns for Navy IT systems. I do plan to reach out to Dr. Blackburn though to explain the possible effort.

  • I lead the Integrated Modeling Environment part of NAVAIR's SET and while Dr. Blackburn is using OpenMBEE in the surrogate project we have no immediate plans to implement OpenMBEE into our NAVAIR, NMCI based enterprise MBSE solution. One of the reasons is due to the fact open source software must have paid support (via 1st or 3rd party) to be hosted in the NMCI data center. I'm not aware of any company that provides support for it at this time. I'm also not sure about any existing security concerns but given the somewhat immature nature of OpenMBEE at this point I image there would be quite a few.

However, I am definitely interested in seeing how other services and SYSCOMs approach OpenMBEE because if it matures like we hope then I would certainly like to see it at NAVAIR in the future.

Let me know if you'd like to have a more detailed discussion on the matter.
