Nick Childs

Senior Fellow for Naval Forces and Maritime Security

International Institute for Strategic Studies 

Nick is responsible for the Institute’s analysis of naval forces and maritime security, and for the data on sea power capabilities published in the flagship annual Military Balance. It is also his job to formulate and deliver research projects in these areas, and contribute to other Institute publications and activities, including conferences and consultancy.

Cdr Anders Puck Nielsen

Military Analyst

Royal Danish Defence College, Copenhagen

 

 

Cdr Anders Puck Nielsen is a military analyst at the Royal Danish Defence College in Copenhagen. His specialities include naval operations and Russian military affairs. He has recently published articles about Russian naval operations and the concept of A2/AD in the Baltic Region. He is also the publisher of the romeosquared.eu blog where he posts about defence issues from a Baltic perspective.

Andrew Monaghan, Ph.D.

Director, Russia Research Network Ltd

Non-Resident Associate Fellow, NATO Defence College, Rome

 

Dr Andrew Monaghan is Director of the Russia Research Network Ltd. Additionally he is a Non-Resident Associate Fellow of the NATO Defence College in Rome (where he is also the Commissioning Editor of the Russian Studies publication series), Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in London, and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. He has previously worked for the Oxford Changing Character of War Centre, Chatham House, NATO and the UK Defence Academy. He has advised various governments and international organisations, as well as major companies. He has served as an expert witness to several parliamentary committees, including the UK’s National Security Strategy Committee, the House of Commons Defence and Foreign Affairs Select Committees, and NATO’s Parliamentary Assembly. He is widely published and is the author of several books, including Dealing with the Russians (Polity, 2019), Power in Modern Russia (MUP, 2017) and The New Politics of Russia (MUP 2016).

 

James Bergeron

Political Advisor to the Commander

Allied Maritime Command, NATO, Northwood, United Kingdom

 

James Bergeron assumed duties as Political Advisor to the Commander, Allied Maritime Command in Northwood, United Kingdom, in 2013. He was previously the POLAD to Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO from 2005. He has served as foreign policy advisor to ten senior US and NATO Commanders in the fields of maritime and joint expeditionary operations.  From March until July 2011 he served as the Political Advisor to Commander NATO Operation Unified Protector in support of UNSCR 1973 operations in Libya. He is regularly consulted on NATO maritime strategy, NATO-EU relations, and was one of the drafters of the Alliance Maritime Strategy. He has published more than twenty articles and book chapters and is currently Honorary Professor of Law, Government and Criminology at the University of Plymouth. A former submariner and retired Commander in the US Navy Reserve, member of the Council on Foreign Relations and co-Chair of the European Law Committee of the American Bar Association.
