Abstract
When Aleksandr Lukashenko so dramatically mishandled the recent elections, he may have doomed his regime but he also created a headache for Moscow. The Kremlin has been caught flat-footed by the new revolution, which has highlighted not just some of the limitations of Russian power, but also divisions within the leadership. How will Moscow respond in the immediate term, and how might the crisis affect wider Russian calculations about its interests and capacities to project power?
