Nick Childs
Senior Fellow for Naval Forces and Maritime Security
International Institute for Strategic Studies
Nick is responsible for the Institute’s analysis of naval forces and maritime security, and for the data on sea power capabilities published in the flagship annual Military Balance. It is also his job to formulate and deliver research projects in these areas, and contribute to other Institute publications and activities, including conferences and consultancy.
Dr. Dmitri Gorenburg
Senior Research Scientist for Strategy, Policy, Plans, and Programs

Dmitry Gorenburg is Senior Research Scientist in the Strategy, Policy, Plans, and Programs division of CNA, where he has worked since 2000. Dr. Gorenburg is an associate at the Harvard University Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies and previously served as Executive Director of the American Association of the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS). His research interests include security issues in the former Soviet Union, Russian military reform, Russian foreign policy, and ethnic politics and identity. Dr. Gorenburg is author of Nationalism for the Masses: Minority Ethnic Mobilization in the Russian Federation (Cambridge University Press, 2003), and has been published in journals such as World Politics and Post-Soviet Affairs. He currently serves as editor of Problems of Post-Communism and was also editor of Russian Politics and Law from 2009 to 2016. Dr. Gorenburg received a B.A. in international relations from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University. Ståle Ulriksen
Senior Lecturer in Sea Power
Royal Norwegian Naval Academy
Ståle Ulriksen is the Senior Lecturer in Sea Power at the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy, where he has worked since 2012. Ulriksen is the project leader for the research project Seapower 2040 at the Naval Academy. He holds a degree in comparative politics, and worked at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs as a researcher and project leader (1991-2000); deputy director (2000-2006); Head of the Department of International Politics (2006-2007) and Head of the Department for Conflict Management and Security (2007-2012). Ulriksen served in the Norwegian Ministry of Defence’s Defence Commission in 2006-2007 and in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Commission on Security from 2010 to 2013. He has been a member of the board of the Norwegian Defence University since 2018. Being particularly interested in applied research, Ulriksen is one of the authors of the current Norwegian Armed Forces Doctrine for Maritime Operations (2015). His research has circled around European operation and integration in security and defence as well as war, military and naval doctrines and operations. Ulriksen has also studied the conflicts in the Balkans, the DR Congo and Afghanistan in the field. Since 2012 he has focused mainly on naval matters, with a particular interest in the development of the Russian Navy and its counterparts in NATO.
