Nick Childs

Senior Fellow for Naval Forces and Maritime Security

International Institute for Strategic Studies 

Nick is responsible for the Institute’s analysis of naval forces and maritime security, and for the data on sea power capabilities published in the flagship annual Military Balance. It is also his job to formulate and deliver research projects in these areas, and contribute to other Institute publications and activities, including conferences and consultancy.

Mathieu Boulegue

Research Fellow, Russian and Eurasia Program

Chatham House

 

Mathieu Boulègue is a research fellow with the Russia and Eurasia Programme at Chatham House. Before joining the institute, Mathieu was a partner at the risk management and strategic research consultancy AESMA, where he worked as director of Eurasian affairs. In his research, Mathieu focuses particularly on Eurasian security and defence issues as well as on Russia’s domestic and foreign policy. Having trained as a policy and security analyst in the field of post-Soviet affairs, Mathieu regularly publishes articles and papers on Eurasian security & foreign policy questions. He is also a frequent invited speaker at conferences and events around the world. He graduated from Sciences Po Toulouse in France and King’s College London (M.A. International Conflict Studies).

Julian Pawlak

Research Associate, Center for Maritime Strategy & Security

Institute for Security Policy as Kiel University

 

Julian Pawlak is a Research Associate at the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University (ISPK) and its adjunct Center for Maritime Strategy & Security. He focuses in his current research on security and defence policy at Europe's Northern Flank and the Baltic Sea region. Julian is ISPK’s project manager of the Baltic Sea Strategy Forum and editor of the forthcoming ISPK Seapower Series volume on Allied Maritime Strategy in the 21st Century (NOMOS: Baden-Baden, 2021).

Dr. Michael Petersen

Director of the Maritime Studies Institute and Associate Professor

United States Naval War College

 

Michael Petersen is the Director of the Russia Maritime Studies Institute and an Associate Professor at the United States Naval War College. His work focuses on Russian naval operations and strategy, as well as net assessments of high-intensity maritime conflict. Prior to his appointment, he served with the Defense Intelligence Agency and National Security Council. He is also the author of Missiles for the Fatherland: Peenemuende, National Socialism, and the V-2 Missile (Cambridge University Press, 2009, 2011) as well as articles, essays, and book chapters on military intelligence and strategic weapons history. He holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Maryland, College Park.
