RSI Connect: Russia-China Military Relations: Cooperation or Competition?

Dr Marcin Kaczmarski is Lecturer in Security Studies in the School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Glasgow and the Programme Director of the International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS), an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree. Dr Kaczmarski is the author of Russia-China relations in the post-crisis international order (Routledge 2015) and published articles in leading academic journals, including International Affairs, Survival, International Politics, Europe-Asia Studies and Problems of Post-Communism. He was a visiting scholar at the Chengchi University in Taiwan, the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center in Japan, the Aleksanteri Institute in Finland, the Kennan Institute in Washington, DC, and the Shanghai International Studies University in China. Prior to joining the University of Glasgow, Dr Kaczmarski combined research and teaching at the University of Warsaw with policy-oriented analysis for the Finnish Institute of International Affairs in Helsinki and the Centre for Eastern Studies in Warsaw.

Alexander Korolev

Dr. Alexander Korolev is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations in the School of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. Before joining UNSW, Alex was an Assistant Professor of Political Science in the School of Asian Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow (2012-2015) and a Research Fellow in the Centre on Asia and Globalisation at the National University Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (2015-2018). He received an MA in International Relations from Nankai University, Zhou Enlai School of Government (2009), and PhD in Political Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2012). He has been a visiting researcher in the Political Science Department at Brown University (2011-2012). His research interests include international relations theory and comparative politics with special reference to China and Russia; great power politics; and China-Russia-US relations in East and Southeast Asia. He is currently working on a research project which explores how small and middle powers can survive and secure their national interests amidst intensifying great power rivalry. His recent articles appeared in various peer-reviewed journals, including International Relations, Foreign Policy Analysis, International Studies Review, Journal of Strategic Studies, Studies in Comparative International Development, Pacific Affairs, Asian Security, Chinese Journal of International Politics, The China Review, and other journals. Alex speaks English, Chinese, and Russian.

Lyle Goldstein
Research Professor
China Maritime Studies Institute, U.S. Naval War College

Lyle J. Goldstein is research professor in the China Maritime Studies Institute (CMSI) at the Naval War College. The founding director of CMSI and author of dozens of articles on Chinese security policy, he focuses on Chinese undersea warfare. On the broader subject of US-China relations, Goldstein published the book Meeting China Halfway in 2015. Over the last several years, Goldstein has focused on the North Korea crisis. Goldstein speaks Russian as well as Chinese and is an affiliate of NWC's new Russia Maritime Studies Institute.
