Bruce J. West is the Senior Scientist in Mathematics (ST) of the U.S. Army Research Office, Information Science Directorate. He is the author of 16 books, and in his effort to communicate science to a general audience three of these books do not contain any equations. He has twice received the ARL Award for Publication and is sought after for the clarity of his scientific presentations in both government and academic venues. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has received multiple awards for his research including the Presidential Meritorious Rank award in 2012. He was a scientist in the private sector for two decades, a Physics professor for one decade, and an ST at ARO since 1999.
Society is entering a time when George Orwell's "thought police" are no longer science fiction, but have a scientific/experimental basis. The thought control of machines, as well as, the actions of others is now based on solid experimental science. The talk will briefly review the history of the direct control of machines by the brain, as well as, the direct transfer of thoughts from one brain to another in rats, monkeys and humans. Interwoven in this presentation will be discussions as to how the Army has taken advantage of these breakthroughs and ending with speculation on how the Army of the future will be transformed by this science.
This talk is part of TRADOC's Mad Scientist initiative. Mad Scientist comprises a series of events to help the Army think about the evolution of the Operational Environment (OE), the effects of all aspects of technology on the future of Armed Conflict, continuously learn, adapt, and innovate, and allow for broader engagement in problem solving. The current series is focused on the Human Dimension 2025 and Beyond.
This presentation is UNCLASSIFIED and open to the public.
