Daniel Newport has a Bachelor's Degree in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University Of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College Of Engineering, is Level III Certified in Systems Engineering and has worked at U.S. Army TARDEC as an engineer for 23 years. During this time he has worked in the areas of Concept Design and Analysis, Mobility Research, Hybrid Electric Powertrain Design and Development and was also the Director of Technology for Program Management Office Heavy Brigade Combat Team. Additionally, he was the Lead Engineer for the Army's Future Combat Systems (FCS) Reconnaissance and Surveillance Vehicle (RSV) and was also an Assistant Product Manager (C4ISR and sensors) for the Army's Ground Combat Vehicle (GCV) program.
Dr. Robert Smith is a Research Engineer in the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC). Dr. Smith works in the computer aided engineering group where he has been since 2008. His career includes experience at Ford Motor Company, Whirlpool Corporation, and General Dynamics Land Systems. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University.
Dan Newport and Dr. Robert Smith will present ideas relative to a “Land-Based Carrier Vehicle” approach and supporting technologies in order to provide improved mobility, lethality, survivability and adaptability in Megacities and Dense Urban Areas.
This talk is part of TRADOC's Mad Scientist initiative. Mad Scientist comprises a series of events to help the Army think about the evolution of the Operational Environment (OE), the effects of all aspects of technology on the future of Armed Conflict, continuously learn, adapt, and innovate, and allow for broader engagement in problem solving. The current series is focused on the Megacities and Dense Urban Areas 2025 and Beyond.
