Nesting Bacteria: There is beauty in the remarkable ability of natural systems to adapt. For their survival, bacteria must sense their environment and adapt as necessary to live in a variety of conditions. They sometimes produce extracellular structures that facilitate attachment to surfaces. Here is a colorized atomic force microscopy image of Pseudomonas protegens cells which have surrounded themselves with fibrous structures in response to a hydrophobic surface. Understanding interactions between microbes and materials enables the protection of Air Force Materiel and helps in developing advanced materials for Air Force applications. This image was previously selected as a finalist in the Science as Art virtual competition sponsored by the Materials Research Society in 2020. Image used with permission. Contributors: Claretta J.
