Blackhole: Into the Abyss: This project sought to investigate deformation mechanisms in crystalline explosives and how pore collapse during high-speed deformation leads to explosive detonation. To do this, we used single crystals of 1,3,5,7-Tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane with designed flaws. Due to the sensitive nature of our material and the scale of our feature of interest, mechanisms for machining were limited. We were inspired to use Focused Ion Beam Milling to more precisely mill pores on the micron length scale. In this image, the microscopic effects immediately following a pore milling is shown. The high contrast color is due to electron charge build up on material that was not fully vaporized. Contributors: Kerry-Ann M. Stirrup, Weinong W. Chen
