All You Need is Mucus: All animals rely upon mucus to fill essential biological functions, including for reproduction, predation, and defense, but rather than celebrate this versatile and wonderful biomaterial, it is often looked at with disgust. To confront this prejudice, we have prepared a poster to celebrate our AFOSR-funded research into the structures and properties of animal mucus. Inspired by the psychedelic concert posters of the 1960s, we remember the period for the inspiring music and to devotion to nature as a source of wonder and inspiration. In a similar vein, our research into mucus seeks guidance from nature to guide the design and development of a new era of synthetic, bioinspired materials that recreate the structure and properties of these long-overlooked biomaterials that are essential for every animal from the lowly worm to the great whale. Mucus is a material so widespread in its usage, so diverse in its function, and so unique in its structure that, with this poster, we ask ‘is there anything trippier than mucus’?
