Trail to Mordor: This foreboding scanning electron micrograph depicts the jagged ridges lining the carrier wafer for a holey metalens. The holey metalens is out of the frame at the base of the circular cavity to the bottom right of the image. The deep channel in the center has been vertically etched to act as a drainage path for highly viscous oil that would fill the circular cavity during nanofabrication. The channel banks have been severely bombarded by high-energy plasma during the destructive etching process, exposing steep craggy towers dissuading the traveller from proceeding further.
