5-Sided Defect: This is an overlay of the measured electric field above a patterned metal surface with a special, symmetrical defect in the center. The rest of the surface is made of metal hexagons, but the center is a pentagon. This causes the “four-leaf clover” field shown in color and represents a fundamental property of defects in solids.
