Projective Objective
This program seeks to provide revolutionary advances in the fundamental understanding of underlying physical processes necessary to control the interaction of electromagnetic energy and charged particles to 1) produce useful work for a variety of applications, including directed energy weapons, sensors and radar, electronic warfare, communications, and novel compact accelerators, or to 2) improve our ability to operate in a range of extreme environments and conditions. The focus of this portfolio is split between exploratory plasma physics and the basic science associated with the generation and collective interaction of electromagnetic fields and plasmas. This includes efforts directed toward an understanding of the basic principles associated with compact pulsed power and research increasing the scientific understanding required to predict energy transfer across a broad range of temporal and spatial scales.
