Overview

  • A Dependent Care FSA (DCFSA) is a pre-tax benefit account used to pay for eligible dependent care services, such as preschool, summer day camp, before or after school programs and child or adult daycare.

Eligibility

  • Enrollment in a DCFSA is open to DoD civilians, regular (active) component service members, and Active Guard Reserve members on Title 10 orders who have dependents with eligible expenses.
  • You must have an eligible dependent and use eligible care expenses to allow yourself and your spouse (if applicable) to work, look for work, or attend school.
  • Your tax filing status will affect the amount you are able to elect in your DCFSA. If you are married filing jointly, you may contribute up to the maximum, $5,000 into your DCFSA. If you are married filing separately, you may only contribute up to $2,500.
  • Both you and your spouse must have earned income for your household to be eligible. If you are a full-time student, or incapable of self-care, you are considered to have $250 per month in earned income for your first dependent and $500 per month in earned income if you have two or more eligible dependents.

Financial Considerations

  • A personal financial manager or counselor can help you set a budget that will work for your family. They can help you decide if a DCFSA supports your overall financial readiness. Connecting with a personal financial manager or counselor is easy and free for service members and their families.
  • A tax consultant can help you examine your entire tax picture. Service members and their families have access to free tax consultation help via Military OneSource.
