Add Internal Data

[toc]

Adding Data to the Verint Group Map

Posting a map to the Map App is one step. knowing what data, you will want to add is another. Within APAN you can either add external or internal data to your map.

  • Internal data is dependent on content created within your group. Internal data uses geotagged content within the blogs, forums, wikis and media galleries.

What is geotagging?

Geotagging associates a city, state, ocean, latitude/longitude, etc. from content in documents, photographs and application posts to a map. It is the process of adding specific location or geographical data to your blog, forum, media gallery or wiki within your Verint Group.

An example is an announcement/blog post that has been geotagged with the latitude and longitude of a bridge that may be damaged.  The post identifies the damaged bridge location with a point on the map.

Geotagged Content

Geographical references:

  • Cities and Towns – New York City or NYC
  • States – Hawaii
  • Countries – United States of America
  • Relative References – About 125 miles south of New York City, NY
  • Latitude and Longitude – 0924N 1618E (means 9°24’N 16°18’E)
  • Military Grid Reference System Format (MGRS) – 36WF2248402617 (means 36°10’5” N 33°15’0” E)

For certain geotags (such as city or state) the surrounding text in the post will be used to assist in finding the correct location. For example, if the post has “NY” in the description with no context it may not be Geotagged, but if the sentence says “New York City, NY” it will be Geotagged.

How to Turn on Geotags

1. As an Owner, go to your group.

2. Click APAN Options. The Options and Settings panel opens.

Note: If the Options widget has been removed due to customizations, add a slash / at the end of the URL with the word “options.”

Example: https://community.apan.org/wg/yourgroupname/options

3. Click Features.

4. Check Geotagging to enable geospatial metadata for group content.

Geotags Advanced Options

  1. Ensure the Auto-geotagger is selected.
    1. This will ensure posts automatically geotag references to geography described in blog, forum, wiki and media posts.
  2. If you are adding pictures in a media gallery, ensure EXIF GPS Data is checked.
    1. Many cameras and mobile phones store EXIF Data when a picture is taken. APAN stores only the GPS info contained in EXIF Data.
    2. Selecting this option allows the GPS data to be stored when the image is uploaded.
      1. For example, if a photograph is taken in front of the White House with an iPhone the photograph will most likely contain geographical information for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, Washington, DC 20500.

Manual Geotagging

Manual Geotagging is the process of typing in a Latitude and Longitude or adding a place marker to the map under a post. This can be done by typing the Latitude/Longitude in or using the place marker icon and zooming in to the exact location the user would like to use as the Geotag.

Note: Manual Geotags override any Automatic Geotags.

Add Geotagged Content to your Map

1. As a user, go to the map you want to add geotagged content to.

2. Click Edit.  The Add Data Panel will appear.

3. On the Search tab to the content, you wish to add. You can add a single post or all of the content from a blog, forum, wiki or media gallery.

Note: You can use the search feature to search for titles of posts.  Description information and content within posts are not searchable with the search feature at this time.

4. Once you locate the post(s) you wish to add, click the + symbol next to the content you wish to add. This will add a layer to your map.

5. "X" out of the Add Data Panel.

6. Click Update Map to save.  If you do not see that your data is added, refresh your map.
