ETS and Retirement

How to Obtain a New Identification Card After Separation:

  • Bring a current government-issued ID card AND another valid form of identification
  • Bring a copy of DD Form 214 (Member 4 copy)
  • Bring a copy of your separation/retirement orders

Additional Notes:

  • ID cards are issued on your official retirement date, which is the day after your last active duty service date (End Term of Service)(ETS) or at the end of your terminal leave.
  • If the current ID card is no longer valid, then a second valid form of identification must be another picture ID. The driver's license can not be expired.
  • Retired ID cards can be issued up to 120 days prior to the established retirement date. The 120 days accommodate the combination of the maximum 90 days leave that may be granted, plus 20 days permissive TDY for house hunting.
  • The active duty CAC ID must be surrendered to receive the retired ID Card.
  • Your TRICARE benefits could be affected if you obtain your retiree ID card prior to your actual retirement date. This can also affect your status as retired. This also applies to your dependents. We strongly suggest waiting to obtain your retiree ID Card until the first day you are no longer on active duty.
