Renewing an Expired ID Card

Common Access Card (CAC)

The earliest a CAC can be renewed before expiring is 90-days, with the following exceptions:

  • Card is damaged
  • Significant change in appearance
  • Change of status (i.e. promotion, branch of service or contracting agency)

Dependent ID Card

For a Dependent to renew their expiring ID Card, they must provide the three following items:

  1) The expired Dependent ID card
  2) An unexpired photo ID issued by state or local government
  3) And one of following:

  • Sponsor present
  • General/Specific Power of Attorney (specifying DEERS/ID Cards) if sponsor is not present
  • Original DD Form 1172-2 signed by the sponsor and ID Card Issuing Facility verifying officer
  • Must present a valid photo Identification. Driver's license can not be expired.

Family Members ID cards are reissued no earlier than 90 days prior to expiration date
