Third-party Chat Clients

[toc]

Because APAN's chat capability is built on XMPP/Jabber, you can use third-party clients to optimize real-time discussions for low-bandwidth situations. This allows users to use other XMPP-based clients with other APAN Community members.

Setting up a Third-party Chat Client

What third-parties does APAN recommend?

  • APAN recommends using a compatible XMPP client.

What are the XMPP standards that APAN uses?

  • For XMPP standards see the XMPP Standards Foundation website for a list of compatible XMPP clients. Other successful APAN Communities with customized chat capabilities have used IM+, Pidgen and Tranverse.

Where can I get a third-party Chat client?

  • Check Google Play or the iTunes App store.
  • You can use the above link for a list of compatible XMPP clients.

What are the configuration settings for third-party chat clients to connect to APAN XMPP Chat Server?

To correctly configure the settings within the chat client you use, you'll need the following information:

  1. Server: xmpp.apan.org
  2. Protocol: XMPP
  3. Port: 5222
  4. Domain: xmpp.apan.org
  5. Select Enable Connection Security
  6. When prompted, Accept the apan.org certificate.

Joining a Group Chat from a Third-party Client

Prerequisite 1:

  • You must be an approved member of the group or site to participate in chat room discussions.

Prerequisite 2:

  • In order to join a Group Chat from a third-party client you need to locate the Chat Room JID.

How do I find what my chat room's JID is?

  1. Go to: https://chat.apan.org/
  2. If a chat room was created, you will be able to see the name of the chat room under the Groups or Sites tab.
  3. Click the group or site name (second column).
  4. The JID will appear in the Edit tab within the far-right corner.

What does JID mean?

  • JID refers to the protocol APAN is using. APAN uses Jabber; therefore, this refers specifically to the Jabber Identifier.

How do I find the chat room ID?

  • The chat room ID is a unique identifier specific to the chat room.  The chat room ID is not the same as the group name.
  • If you've found the JID, it is the numbers and/or letters prior to the @ symbol in the JID.

What is the conference address that APAN uses?

The conference address for APAN chat rooms is:

conference.xmpp.apan.org

What is the host that APAN uses?

The host address for APAN chat rooms is:

xmpp.apan.org

Port: 5222
