Overview

  • Instant messaging (IM) or Peer-to Peer (P2P) chat assists you to have real-time one-on-one conversations.

IM Colleagues

How do I use Instant Message?

  1. Log in to APAN.
  2. Click the blue chat bubbles in the lower, right corner.
  3. Click the person’s name you wish to chat with.
    • You must be a colleague with someone to be able to chat.
    • Locate the person's profile you wish to message.
    • Click the colleague link. Once the person has accepted you as a colleague, you can then message with that individual.

How do I add a colleague to instant message with?

To begin chatting with someone, the person must be added as a colleague. Once a person is added as a colleague, they will automatically be added to your instant message roster.

  1. To add a colleague, navigate to a user’s profile page and click Add as colleague list.
  2. A “Send a colleague request” memo will open. In the text editor field, enter your message and click send request.
  3. Once the person accepts your request, that individual will automatically be added to your instant message roster.

What does the number to the right of the chat bubbles reflect?                     

  • This identifies the number of colleagues that are online.

None of my colleagues are showing up in my Instant Message list how can I see if they are busy, or off-line?

  1. To change your Instant Message settings, locate the Options icon in the blue bar at the top of the Instant Message roster.
  2. Select your Colleagues List Setting preference to display offline colleagues.

How do I change my Instant Message status?

  1. To change your Instant Message status, click the arrow to the left of your name.
  2. Select your preferred status.

How do I change my Instant Message settings?

  • To change your Instant Message settings, locate the options icon in the blue bar at the top of the chat window.

How do I change my Display Name?

  1. Log into APAN and go to My APAN.
  2. Click Community Settings on left-hand side.
  3. Under Basic Information, update your display name.

How many characters may I use for my Display Name?

  • The display name field allows 50 characters.

Translate IM

How do I change my Instant Message chat language?

  • Go to the Translate Wiki > How do I translate my page/group/site?
  • When you translate your page, the language within the IM also changes.

When I select a different language, does the person I’m chatting with see this language?

  • No. The person you’re chatting with will see the language that they select. The default language is English.

What does the button next to settings do?

  • When this icon appears, it shows that Instant Messaging is being translated. When you click it, you will see the original text of the translation.
