No Cost Extension (NCE) Request

AFOSR/IO No-Cost Extension (NCE) Policy

We require prior written approval to extend the period of performance, without additional funds, beyond the expiration date of the grant. We only grant no-cost extensions when they are truly warranted and properly documented.

 For an extension to be granted, you must provide the following at least thirty (30) days prior to the expiration of the award:

• Notice in writing to your respective International Program Officer, Grants Officer, (both of these emails can be found on the current grant award document) and relevant organizational inbox (AOARD, EOARD, SOARD) , including the supporting reasons, and revised expiration date (+6 month, +12 month).
• The extension must be requested on university letterhead and signed by the Principal Investigator.
• You must include your most recent SF425 Federal Financial Report (Download SF425) signed by your research/business officer representative with your request.

AFOSR uses this information to evaluate the business aspects of your request. In no event will the period of performance be extended merely for the purpose of using unobligated balances.  PIs should make every effort to ensure work is completed on time.  If the PI and the business office deem a no-cost extension is truly warranted, the PI must submit the request to the Program Officer and Grants Officer for initial review and a recommendation.
