The AFOSR International Office (AFOSR/IO) is located in Arlington, Virginia. Their mission is to support the Air Force Defense Research Science Program by expanding the horizon of scientific knowledge through international liaison and leadership to discover, shape, and champion basic science that will create revolutionary breakthroughs to profoundly impact future Air Force warfighting and peacekeeping capabilities.
AFOSR/IO serves three main functions.
First, it serves as the International Point of Contact (IPOC) for AFOSR. This role includes establishing international research initiatives with world-class scientists and institutions to support AFOSR core and external programs, identifying and advocating international opportunities to work with AFOSR, providing technology security screening and training for international efforts to include AFOSR and all of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), administering the Engineer and Scientist Exchange Program (ESEP) for SAF/IA, and conducting the Window-on-Europe, Asia, and Americas Programs.
Second, the IO office oversees the liaison for basic research activities with all of the Americas.
And thirdly, the IO office supports the overall AFRL International Enterprise in developing strategies, representing AFRL at international forums, maintaining a database of international AFRL activity, performing data-mining and related training, publishing the tri-weekly AFRL International Notes, hosting the annual AFRL-wide IPOC Workshop, and representing AFRL as the international liaison in the National Capitol area.
