105: Content Editor and other Content Tools

[toc]

Content Editing

Content editing is used throughout the community. You can choose which kind of editor you want - Plain text or Enhanced - in your Settings > Options tab.

The information below applies to the enhanced editor. This editor includes a toolbar of options and a content area.

  • Pressing Tab while in a table cell will take you to the next horizontal column cell or row.
  • Pressing Shift/Tab will create an out-dent in numbered or bulleted lists.
  • When you create a link in the editor, it is automatically converted to a hyperlink. For example, if you enter "Google", it becomes a live link. The rich text editor utilizes Undo and Redo buttons in the GUI. (But the Ctrl+Z or Ctrl+Y keyboard shortcuts still work.)

Edit in Full-Screen Mode

To give yourself more editing room, you can toggle the content window into full-screen mode. This mode supports all editing functions but spell check. You can toggle back and forth easily from one mode to the other without saving the content.

To toggle between regular and full screen mode:

  1. Edit a content page (wiki, forum thread, media gallery or blog post).
  2. On the enhanced text editor menu bar, click View > Full-screen mode button. Notice that the content area consumes all the available browser area.
  3. To return to regular mode, click View > Full-screen mode button again.

Drag and Drop

Almost any kind of file can be dragged and dropped onto a blog, forum, media, or wiki post. This action works similarly to the Insert Image button or Insert Media button on the enhanced text editor toolbar.

When a file is dragged onto a post:

  • Drag and dropped files are visible after the post is saved.
  • Multiple files can be dragged and dropped at the same time.
  • Very large files (like 100mb) can be drag and dropped.
  • When an unsupported file type (such as .exe, .rpt, or .csv) is dragged over an error message is displayed and the file isn’t pasted into the editor.

Drag and Drop a File into a Post

  1. Navigate to the desired post.
  2. Edit or create (in the post Create/Edit window) the desired post.
  3. Within your computer (desktop or other file location), navigate to the desired file.
  4. Click and hold the mouse button on this file, moving it over the post’s text field. (You can also select multiple files as well!)
  5. Release the mouse button. The file will be dropped onto the post.
  6. Click Post. The image or icon will appear on the post.

Embed a Media File in a Post

You can embed a file into any kind of content post using the editor Insert Media button.  This will allow you to:

  • Upload the file from YouTube or a web URL.
  • Upload the file from a hard drive.
  • Upload the file from search within your community.  The supported media file types are specified on the User Files page.

Insert a Media File for Any Content in a Wiki, Blog, or Forum Post

  1. In the enhanced text editor, click Insert > Insert image/video/file. The insert/edit media dialog box appears.
  2. In the From drop-down list, select the source option for the media.
  3. Refer to and follow the appropriate section below for specific instructions by media location.

Embed a File from a Web URL

  1. In the From drop-down list, select Web (URL).
  2. In the URL field, paste the file URL for the media. The preview appears.
  3. If desired, resize the file with the Dimensions settings. Telligent Community automatically recognizes the size of most videos.
  4. Click OK.
Using this setting will not cause the content to be uploaded or in any way transferred to your Telligent Community site. This option will simply link the media file to your post.
Some media types, such as video, are capable of streaming directly from your post, so it may appear as if it is on your site.

Embed a File from a Computer

  1. In the From drop-down list, select File Upload. In the File field of the Insert/Edit media dialog box, browse to find the file.
  2. Click Open or Choose in the dialog box. If the file is a graphic, a preview of it might appear in the preview window.
  3. If appropriate or desired, resize the file with the Dimensions settings.
  4. Click OK.

Embed a Poll into a Post

Using this feature, a poll can be inserted into content with the Insert button on the Enhanced Text Editor.

To add a poll to content:

  1. Create a piece of content, such as a blog post.
  2. In the text editor, click Insert > Insert Poll.  The Insert Poll dialog box appears. With this dialog, you can create a poll and configure result viewing options.
  3. To create a poll:
    1. Select Poll from the Type drop-down list.
    2. Click the Create Poll tab.
    3. In the Question field, type the poll question.
    4. Optionally, add a description in the Description field.
    5. Add poll options in the Options area boxes ("Enter an option here.") With these fields, you can:
      1. Click Add option to create another poll option.
      2. Move an option up in the list by clicking the up arrow beside the option.
      3. Move an option down in the list by clicking the down arrow beside the option.
      4. Remove an option by clicking the remove button beside the option.
  4. To configure result viewing options:
    1. Click Configuration. The Configuration options appear.  If you want the poll to expire, select the expiration date on the calendar. Enter the expiration time in the Poll expiration field.
    2. Select the result viewing option:
      1. Always - Displays the results to the user before a user has voted and afterward.
      2. After voting - Displays the result after a user has voted.
      3. After expires - Displays the results only after the expiration date and time.
  5. Click the Insert poll tab.
  6. Click Insert. The poll will be inserted into the text editor (but no preview is shown).
  7. Finish editing your document.
  8. Click Ok.

Voting

To vote for a poll option, select the desired poll option and click Vote.

View results

To see results, click View results.

User vote report

To view the User Vote Report, click User Vote Report.

You must have appropriate permissions to view this report, which shows the vote of each voter.

Here, you can click on the poll to view it, or click the number of votes to see who voted for each option.

Pinning

You can use pinning to incorporate external URLs (including media) in a media gallery. Pinning is similar to adding a URL to the media gallery, except that it works for previously unsupported URLs.

How Pinning Works

When the URL is entered and it cannot be interpreted as a supported media type, the Telligent Group uses the URL file viewer and retrieves that URL, then inspects it to retrieve title, site, and description information. It also looks for a valid, usable image in the source. All of the extracted information is then stored.  From that point on, the preview is based on this extracted data, saved locally. Periodically, the preview will be reloaded to stay up to date.

Thus there is no direct reference from the preview to the remote Internet site; and your Telligent Group isn't dependent on the remote site for keeping images because it downloads the image and stores it locally to ensure that, as long as your Telligent Group provides a link to the image, it continues to exist.

Pinning works only within Media Galleries.

Pin Content into the Media Gallery

  1. Navigate to the gallery where you want to pin the URL.
  2. Click New. If prompted to choose which media gallery to upload in, select the desired gallery. The upload page appears.
  3. Enter the URL into the File or website field.
  4. Enter a title in the Name field.
  5. Enter text in the post body.
  6. Check any options you want to enable (such as emailing comments),
  7. Click Post. The post appears in the group's activity stream.
  8. When you see a message that the title and body text are displayed on the post page, click View to click through and view the original post.

Pinning with Links from your Group

When Pinning URLs within the same Group, the permissions of the user viewing the preview are taken into account.  URLs referencing a forum thread, for example, will show the forum thread's title and excerpt with the group's logo to users with permission to read the thread.
