108: Quick Posts

Quick Post is a powerful and useful widget - providing great flexibility in its posting capabilities (status messages; blogs; forums; media galleries; wikis; uploaded images or video; URLs; text files). The widget is used on the site home page, group home page, or on a user's dashboard.

 Any Quick Post status message is limited to 512 characters.
 Quick Post text postings have no character limit.

Creating Quick Post content - Members

You can publish status messages, text content (blog posts and wiki posts, and forum threads), and media content via Quick Post.

Post a Status Message

  1. Click Leave a message.
  2. Type your status message in the "Leave a message" field.
  3. If you are allowed to target groups, you can decide whether to "Share with everyone" on the site, or you can target a specific group
  4. Click Post. The post will be shown on the site or group home page.

Attach a photo, video, or file to a status message

  1. Click Leave a message.
  2. Type the message in the "Leave a message" field.
  3. Click Add a photo, video, or file. The navigation window appears.
  4. Navigate to the photo/video/file you want to attach.
  5. Click OK. The item appears with your status message, giving you options to Post, Change file, or Remove file.
  6. Click Post.

Comment on a Status Message

  1. Navigate to the status message.
  2. Click the Comment link.  The "Write a comment" field appears.
  3. Type the comment into the "Write a comment" field.
  4. Hit Enter on the keyboard. The comment appears beneath the status message.

Mention Someone in a Status Message or Comment

  1. Begin typing your comment or status message in the "Leave a message" field.
  2. Type @.
  3. Begin typing the user name. The user name drop-down list appears.
  4. Select the user name from the drop-down list.
  5. Finish typing your text.
  6. Hit Enter on the keyboard (or Post if you are typing a status message). The mention appears in the text. Clicking the linked user name will take you to their profile.

Like a status message

  1. Click the Like link beneath the status message or comment.
  2. Your like increments under the post or comment. The number of likes will link to a list of all likers.

Target a group for a message

(Note: to do this, the admin must have selected the "Enable group selection" check box in the Quick Post widget configuration.)

  1. Click the Share with everyone drop-down list. A list of your available groups appears. If the group is not shown, you can search for it in the top block of the list.
  2. Select the desired group.
  3. Continue on to post your message as instructed above.

Target an application (blog, forum, media gallery, or wiki)

  1. Click the Share with everyone drop-down list. A list of your available groups appears. If the group is not shown, you can search for it in the top block of the list.
  2. Select the desired group. Its available applications appear to the drop-down list's right.
  3. Select the desired application to the right of the group name. You are redirected to a posting page.
  4. Continue with your post. The post appears in the activity stream.
 Group Owners:
 If Quick Post's configuration "Enable group selection" check box is checked, you will be able to select a group or subgroup you have access to from the widget's "Share with" drop-down list. You will also be able to post directly to the applications that group has. The alternative configuration option is "Current," which will only allow you to post to the current group and its applications.
