Mathematics and Operations Research

Program Description

The Mathematics and Operations Research portfolio supports basic science in a broad range of mathematical domains aimed at developing innovative, fast, and reliable algorithms and methods to address large and complex US Air Force applications. Modern technologies have made data collection ubiquitous in the Air Force; data is collected on everything from medical care to the outputs from individual radio frequency sensors. As the amount and complexity of data increases, new techniques are required extract all the information captured within the data. Specifically, the portfolio advances this effort via three primary research foci: optimization, machine learning, and uncertainty quantification. Collectively, these focus areas drive toward novel approaches for modeling and data analysis, along with theoretical performance guarantees. The foundational research supported by this portfolio most closely supports research efforts of the Sensors and Information Directorates and AFOSR. About EOARD
Established in 1952, the mission of the European Office of Aerospace Research & Development (office symbol: AFRL/AFOSR/IOE) is to discover, shape, and champion fundamental research of profound scientific impact and Air Force relevance.  Located in London, our area of engagement includes Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and former Soviet states.  EOARD provides direct financial support (and support on behalf of other AF and DoD funding agencies) for innovative international science, primarily through research grants.  In addition, we support technical exchanges and visiting scientists to foster collaborations between leading researchers and the Air Force research community.  (Contact a Program Officer or eoard.orgbox@us.af.mil.)
