Information Sciences

Objective
This program seeks breakthrough basic research in the information sciences in four core, integrating themes:

I.  Mission Assurance and Empowerment

• Network topology research.  This topic is seeking new approaches in collecting, analyzing, modeling, and visualizing large-scale network topologies at all levels.  Of particular research interest are newly developing Internet topologies, like IPv6 and mobile network topologies.  Ideally, concepts developed during the course of this research should assist in developing a “physics” of cyberspace model.
• Secure network protocol research.  Research should focus on developing secure communications between sets of nodes.

II.  Agility and Resilience

• Binary executable analysis.  Research should develop new technologies to analyze binary executables (not source code).  Analysis should focus on identification and understanding of functional components contained in an executable and develop technologies to extract identified functional components into self-contained, executable modules.

III.  Optimized Human-Machine Systems

• Scalable analytics and data processing.   Research addressing the limitations of current big data analytics is strongly encouraged.  This includes generic approaches for computational intelligence in solving hard problems by means of machine learning, data mining and artificial intelligence, e.g. curse of dimensionality, feature selection/construction, rare phenomena, uncertainty, partial observability, information fusion, collective intelligence, etc.
• Automated planning algorithms.  Approaches that focus on distributed planning algorithms able to utilize cloud architectures and reason over real-time, dynamic datasets are strongly encouraged.   Research that explores predictive, optimal selection and dynamic re-planning under uncertainty is of particular interest.
• Human-machine interfaces.  This topic focuses on new interface concepts that optimize the real-time decision making of human operators and reduce human load/stress.  Of particular interest are interfaces that enable humans to operate in coordination with machines and network domains.

IV. Software and Hardware Foundations of Trust

• We seek high risk, high reward proposals that address the most compelling problems in the above areas.  The intent is to start the dialogue with investigators in order to learn what they feel are the driving problems that need to be addressed.
