Program Description
This portfolio covers a wide range of fundamental science problems under the heading of Aeronautical Sciences. Aeronautical Sciences covers any and all technology associated with enabling flight in air or that leads to a greater understanding of sciences therein. There are three main sub-areas of research focus within this program: 1) Aerodynamics, which covers fundamental science associated with the motion of air (or fluid), particularly when interacting with a body, and for which the relevant challenges in this area include hypersonics, flow physics for control, unsteady and low Reynolds number aerodynamics, boundary layer physics (especially transition), and fluid-structure interaction; 2) Air Vehicle Sciences, which deals with sciences associated with the air vehicle configuration, operation, and/or structures which can lead to increases in performance or agility; and 3) Air Breathing Propulsion, which covers fundamental research associated with all aspects of air-breathing propulsion, including improved performance of conventional engines and enabling capabilities for supersonic combustion engines.
About EOARDEstablished in 1952, the mission of the European Office of Aerospace Research & Development (office symbol: AFRL/AFOSR/IOE) is to discover, shape, and champion fundamental research of profound scientific impact and Air Force relevance. Located in London, our area of engagement includes Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and former Soviet states. EOARD provides direct financial support (and support on behalf of other AF and DoD funding agencies) for innovative international science, primarily through research grants. In addition, we support technical exchanges and visiting scientists to foster collaborations between leading researchers and the Air Force research community.
